Family papers, 1850-1944.

The collection contains letters, memoirs, genealogical material, memoirs, and a trip diary, all from Gray's family members. Correspondence is mainly from Selma Neubacher Steele, second wife of artist T.C. Steele, to Gray's grandmother, Mae Hunter Weinstein. Topics include T.C. Steele's work, and his widow's efforts to make his Brown County studio a state historical site. There is also a short essay by Gray about outstanding women in the history of the First Congregational Church of Terre Haute; memoirs of Gray's uncle, Robert Hunter, a socialist; genealogical materials about the Weinstein family; memoirs of Gray's grandmother, Thirza Belle Hamilton Weinstein, of Terre Haute; and a diary of an 1850 overland trip to California by William B. Ogle of Vigo County.

A native of Indiana, Steele was primarily known as a landscape artist with an interest in Impressionism and as a member of the Hoosier School of art. He married Mary E. Lakin in 1870 and moved to Indianapolis, working primarily as a portrait painter. From 1880 to 1885 he studied in Munich, and returned to Indianapolis with an interest in landscape painting. Robert Hunter was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, the son of William Robert and Caroline Fouts Hunter.
